Lime products

Ground lime rock is used increasingly by famers as Agriculture lime,for neautralizing acidic soils and improving workability of soil.

Agricultural lime is produced as a by product in the limestone calcination process in form of kiln dust.
Uses Of Agricultural lime
Like quicklime, agricultural lime neutralises acidic soils and improves workability of soils. Calcium and magnesium ions are restored in the soil by soil liming.

Used in the chemical industries and road construction for soil stabilization. Other uses include: Water treatment, Sugar refining, Dehairing of hides and Lime washing.

Calcium hydroxide or hydrated lime is produced by adding water to unslaked lime according to the reaction:
CaO   +   H2O    =    Ca(OH)2
During this process heat is released and the unslaked lime doubles its volume. Hydrated lime is also known as slaked  lime and is very fine dry powder.


Metallurgical Applications
Hydrated Lime is used in PH control, which facilitates precipitation of cobalt hydroxide from the electrolyte in cobalt production.
    Sugar Refinery
In the production of sugar from both cane and beets, the crude sugar juice (sucrose) is treated with lime. This forms insolubles that are filtered to remove phosphatic materials and organic acids. The resulting juice is further treated to achieve greater purity of sugar solution which is ultimately crystallised and packaged.

Water Treatment
Hydrated lime is mixed with other coagulant aids in water purification to achieve a clear suspension and serve as a filter aid. Lime also assists in removal of bacterial and temporary hardness due to the presence of bicarbonates.


Limestone is various sizes with the same chemical and physical composition. The sizes are 0-10mm (fluxstone), (10-19mm) and (19-35mm) kilnstone. The limestone serves as the raw material for quicklime production.

Limestone from the quarry is crushed and screened into various size aggregates.


Metallurgical Operations
In metallurgical operations, fluxstone (10mm to dust) and kilnstone (10-35mm) is used in Mine smelters to flux the metal ores to form slag.

Glass Manufacture
Limestone improves properties of calcium silicate products such as tumblers, glasses and bottles. Limestone inhibits chemical attack, makes it less brittle and stronger but improves appearance and heat shock of glass. Limestone is the lowest- cost fluxing material for glass.


Used as a neutralizing agent for PH Control in the mining industry’s metallurgical processes and chemical industries.

Lime is produced in a thermal process known as calcination according to the reaction.
CaCO3 + Heat  =  CaO  +  CO2
Heat causes the calcium carbonate to lose a molecule of carbon dioxide. The end product is calcium Oxide, better known as unslaked lime or quicklime.
At Ndola Lime this process is achieved in oil-fired rotary and vertical kilns.

In metallurgical processes lime is used for PH control, acid neutralisation and effluent disposal. The Mines are largest user of quicklime.
