Used in the chemical industries and road construction for soil stabilization. Other uses include: Water treatment, Sugar refining, Dehairing of hides and Lime washing.

PRODUCTION
Calcium hydroxide or hydrated lime is produced by adding water to unslaked lime according to the reaction:
CaO   +   H2O    =    Ca(OH)2
During this process heat is released and the unslaked lime doubles its volume. Hydrated lime is also known as slaked  lime and is very fine dry powder.

USES OF HYDRATED LIME

Metallurgical Applications
Hydrated Lime is used in PH control, which facilitates precipitation of cobalt hydroxide from the electrolyte in cobalt production.
    Sugar Refinery
In the production of sugar from both cane and beets, the crude sugar juice (sucrose) is treated with lime. This forms insolubles that are filtered to remove phosphatic materials and organic acids. The resulting juice is further treated to achieve greater purity of sugar solution which is ultimately crystallised and packaged.

Water Treatment
Hydrated lime is mixed with other coagulant aids in water purification to achieve a clear suspension and serve as a filter aid. Lime also assists in removal of bacterial and temporary hardness due to the presence of bicarbonates.

Bleach Manufacture
Hydrated Lime occupies the role of absorbent and vehicle for chlorine in commercial dry bleaches as HTH. Lime in water suspension is reacted with chlorine according to the reaction:
Cl2    +  Ca(OH)2   =    Ca (OCl)2  + H2

Leather Tanning
Lime suspensions are used for dehairing and plumbing hides preparatory for leather tanning.

Salt Production
Hydrated Lime is used by salt producers in the purification of sodium chloride  (NaCl)  brines in order to produce good grade  salt.

Sewage Treatment
Lime is used as a sanitation aid in sewage treatment. Application is extended for use in septic tanks and pit latrines to remove the stench. When employed with other chemicals lime conditions sewage sludge for efficient disposal.

Sterilization
Due to its strong basicity and high PH value, resulting caustic alkalinity of hydrated lime has useful germicidal properties which destroys most pathogens.

Animal Dips
Triatax lime stabiliser produced by Africa Health is used in conjunction with triatix dip for animal dipping. The lime stabiliser which contains 23% hydrated lime stabilises the dip in the dip tank by reducing the acidity level.
    Bleach Chicken Litter
Hydrated lime is applied on floors of poultry houses which are covered with a loose litter material of straw, hay or saw dust which when wet, sogg and matted, tend to harbor coccidiosis and parasitic poultry diseases.

Fertilizer Manufacture
In mixed fertilizer manufacture, some hydrated lime is added in the process to make the fertilizer more free flowing (less caking), reduces "bag rotting" by neutralising minute traces of free acid still present in the super phosphate and contribute a valuable plant nutrient magnesium to the mix.

Coal Processing
Lime is added during the production of coal because of the acidic nature of the process at Maamba Collieries. Lime neutralises the acids and hence helps prolong the life span of plant machinery.

Lime Mortar
Hydrated lime can be used alone or mixed with sand or cement as a mortar/plaster. Lime improves the plasticity of the mix and eliminates the need for rewatering, resulting in well filled water tight and faster brick laying.

White Washing
Lime is used for white washing of buildings. Salt, aluminium sulphate and pigments are also added to achieve desired colour  shades.

Road Construction
Due to its plasticity nature, hydrated lime is used in road construction for road stabilisation and hence avoids potholes formation.

Other Uses
Hydrated lime is also utilised in the paint, explosive and vanish manufacture to mention but a few.
